Transfer Dropbox files to another Dropbox account
Copy or move between two Dropbox accounts, personal or business, server to server, with every file checked on arrival.
Why not download and re-upload
Downloading everything and uploading it again works for a few gigabytes. Past that it is limited by your home connection twice over, needs the disk space to hold it all in between, and stops whenever the laptop sleeps. A server-side transfer streams the files from one account to the other on our servers: nothing touches your machine, and the job keeps running after you close the tab.
Steps
- On the Clouds screen, add Dropbox and sign in with the account the files are in now.
- Add Dropbox again with the other account.
- Pick the source and destination folders, choose Copy or Move, and start.
What arrives, and what does not
- Both sides use Dropbox's content hash, so every file is verified on arrival.
- The largest single file Dropbox takes through its API is 350 GB.
- Shared folders you were invited to are copied as ordinary folders: the new account owns the copy, and the old invitation is not carried over.
Questions
Can I move just one folder?
Yes. Pick any folder on either side; the whole account is only the largest case.
